Transcendent
Transcendent includes a series of monotype etched prints created with individual variations and a collection of laser cut and engraved iridescent acrylic pieces.
Butterflies are an important symbol of freedom and transformation. Transcendent is a butterfly with many symbols representing different elements of my identity and thesis explorations.
I also wanted to use the laser cut and engraved acrylic to add dimension and shimmer to the butterfly which I feel emphasized the sense of freedom and movement.

The antennae, the circle, and cross on the body of the butterfly form together to make the transgender symbol. The pin holds down the butterfly, putting it on display for admiration and ridicule alike. The inner corner of the lower wing holds the Brazilian flag and next to it are lines recalling the folds of the fat body. There is a clitoris on the upper wing and below it, a circle with curved lines radiating out representing community. There are many more symbols and interpretations in the wings to be found.
